Mi'kmaq First Nations

The flag featured at left has been described as follows: the white field denoted the extensiveness of the Mi'kmaw territory or Megumaage within the Atlantic Provinces. The red cross set upon this field represented the church. The star/sun symbol or Wasoo, placed near the figure of the new moon in the upper right quadrant, designated the source of animating power in the universe, and accounted for the persistence of traditional Mi'kmaw beliefs concerning power and revitalization [Chute:1992].
